Microsoft debuts new command line app called Windows Terminal

While many South Africans are pondering where to place their mark for the national elections tomorrow, developers are likely more concerned with Microsoft Build 2019, which is currently underway in Seattle, Washington this week.

Naturally the event has seen a myriad announcements made, with one of the more interesting ones being a new command line app that Microsoft is calling Windows Terminal.

The app is designed specifically to offer developers a specific location in Windows to access environments such as PowerShell, CMD or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Added to this will be customisation tools for devs, along with theming and multiple tab support.

There’s also integration for emoji and other GPU-text rendering, if that’s your thing.

In terms of availability, Windows Terminal will launch in the Microsoft Store in Windows 10 around the middle of they year, with no specific date mentioned by the firm, but Summer 2019 Stateside slated.

Microsoft also adds that once Windows Terminal 1.0 ships later this year, they are also planning to release a backlog of new features that they’ve been working.

Furthermore Microsoft is making it open source via a repository on GitHub starting today, along with the entire Windows Console.

“Starting this summer, try installing and running Windows Terminal from the Microsoft Store. If you come across any bugs, share feedback either via the Feedback Hub or GitHub issues for detailed issues/discussions,” program manager for Windows Console, Command-Line, & WSL, Kayla Cinnamon explained in a blog post.

“We can’t wait to see what exciting improvements and features you make to Windows Terminal and Windows Console,” she concluded.
