3D Print of Halo’s SRS99-AM sniper rifle is ludicrously large

In the niche world of giant 3D printed weaponry, swords are usually king with Final Fantasy’s Buster Sword and Berserk’s Dragon Slayer being the largest we’ve come across. Now a new challenger approaches from Halo in the SRS99-AM sniper rifle.

This 65 inch (165 centimetre) behemoth is the work of user Apropalypse, with this being the second time they have printed this prop gun. The first version was only at an 80% scale of how large it should be when extrapolated from the game, but this new one is the full 1:1 affair.

Modelling for this prop gun was done in Autodesk Inventor over the course of just five hours. The model from the original, smaller version of the gun had to be completely overhauled to work at this larger size. For reference Apropalypse tells us that screenshots from the game using theatre mode were used.

Printing, as you may imagine, took much longer at 150 hours using black PLA filament. Despite all that printing not everything in the prop is extruded plastic.

Square dowels are used through the structure to tie it together and keep everything rigid. In addition to this, PVC pipes are substituted here for the barrels. Both of these methods are common tricks we see for these larger prints, so we’re not too surprised to see them here.

With assembly done gaps between the pieces were filled in with spot putty and sanded down before four coats of filler primer were applied and similarly sanded.

With everything put together and smoothed out, painting could begin. A black base coat was needed here as it’s the primary colour of most of the build and, after some masking, the pieces which needed to be a different colour were spray painted appropriately.

Those looking to make their own version of this project can find the files to do so available for free over on Thingiverse.

Those looking at also taking on the task of making a full size variant should see it in comparison to a regular person holding it (in the header image above). In the gallery below you will also see an unfinished version of the print compared to a Nintendo Switch, and the removable magazine against a can of cola.
