Destiny 2’s Crown of Sorrow raid drops 4th June

With Destiny 2’s Season of the Drifter drawing to a close, Bungie has shed light on the next season in its Annual Pass – Season of Opulence.

While details about the season are still thin on the ground, Bungie has shared news about one of the bigger events in the Destiny world – raids.

These six person challenges test players and when a new raid launches, clans compete against each other to earn the honour of being the world’s first to complete the raid.

So, the Season of Opulence raid.

The raid is called Crown of Sorrow and goes live on 4th June at 4PM PDT (that’s 01:00 on 5th June local time) which is odd because this is six hours after the Season of Opulence goes live.

“Starting June 4, 2019, Season of Opulence kicks off for all players of Destiny 2. Many of you are familiar with how raids can launch with new content—usually on a Friday at reset. This season, we’re doing something a little different. Owners of the Annual Pass will be challenged to conquer a new raid on day one. Here’s some context on this new plan and changes to the upcoming Power climb,” Bungie writes in the This Week At Bungie update.

The recommended power for the Crown of Sorrow raid is set at 715 which doesn’t sound all that high but given players will have just six hours to grind out enough gear to be raid ready, it’s an interesting choice.

In a bid to level the playing field somewhat, Bungie will disable the Last Wish and Scourge of the Past raids until Crown of Sorrow has been beaten.

“This prevents players with a stash of Ethereal Keys from having a leg up in the race,” Bungie said.

And that is really all we know for certain.

We do know that Season of Opulence is taking us back to the Leviathan above Nessus given the artwork we’ve seen in teasers but what exactly we’ll be doing there is unclear.

While the logic is that we’re doing something for Emperor Calus, the use of Sorrow in the raid’s name makes me wonder if me might finally be facing the sister of Oryx and the Witch Queen herself, Savathûn.

With the story from Forsaken and the Dreaming City yet to be tied up completely and the appearance of Thorn, our theories are growing wilder by the day.

We won’t have to wait long to find out though and if you’re like us and want to take part in the raid be sure to take leave for the 5th, and possibly 6th June, just to recover.

Oh and if you want to know what you’re up against when the raid arrives, check out clan Redeem’s speedrun of the Scourge of the Past raid below.
