JMPD installs more than 400 CCTV surveillance cameras in inner city

Earlier this year the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) introduced a WhatsApp hotline, where motorists were able to report cases of reckless and negligent driving on the roads.

Now they have a new solution in the bid to combat the high crime rate reported in the inner city of Johannesburg, with the JMPD implementing a new surveillance system that has more than 400 CCTV cameras operating in the area.

According to ENCA, JMPD hand selected 80 officers who will be dispatched in the inner city to respond when criminal acts occur.

“The more important launch we had been the IOC relational unit, where 80 JMPD officers were hand-picked because we wanted the lean and mean to ensure that the incidents we pick up in the IOC are attended to immediately,” said MMC for Public Safety, Micheal Sun.

Furthermore ENCA adds that the Department has over 100 agents in their 24-hour operations centre who are able to control the cameras while also checking blind spots in the area and dispatching officers when required.

“We are going to monitor and insure that all the criminals in the inner city are squeezed out of the city,” added JMPD chief, David Tembe.

It should be interesting if this new system will not only be a crime deterrent, along with helping to solve some cases with the recorded footage.
