LG reveals new Neural Engine chip to accelerate its own AI ecosystem

LG has been a little quiet of late, which is why we were pleased to hear that the South Korean firm recently unveiled a new AI chip to help drive the development of their own ecosystem of devices.

It’s not the first time that LG has dabbled in the AI field, with the firm releasing a range of products under ThinQ platform, but those offerings hinged upon the silicon and processing power of other manufacturer’s technology.

Now LG has its own proprietary AI chip which it is calling the Neural Engine, which they claim mimics the neural network of a human brain. While that sounds good on paper, we’ll need to see the chip in action before we start lauding it with such high praise.

“The AI Chip incorporates visual intelligence to better recognize and distinguish space, location, objects and users while voice intelligence accurately recognizes voice and noise characteristics while product intelligence enhances the capabilities of the device by detecting physical and chemical changes in the environment,” explained LG in a press release.

“The chip also makes it possible to implement customized AI services by processing and learning from video and audio data in order to enhance recognition of the user’s emotions and behaviors and the situational context,” they added.

Much like Huawei’s Mobile AI-touting Kirin chipsets and Apple’s A12 Bionic, it appears as if LG’s Neural Engine will handle its AI tasks without requiring connectivity to the cloud. Amazon too is looking to create a chipset that can bring native AI computing to its Alexa-based devices.

“Our AI Chip is designed to provide optimized artificial intelligence solutions for future LG products,” noted I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. The firm has remained mum on when we could see said solutions or products, so we’ll have to wait and see how LG puts it into practice.

“This will further enhance the three key pillars of our artificial intelligence strategy – evolve, connect and open – and provide customers with an improved experience for a better life,” concluded Park.
