Sony’s Xperia 1 now up for pre-order in Europe & on sale 12th July in US

With all the hubbub at MWC 19 focused on foldable phones, you may have missed some of Sony’s announcements, and in particular their new flagship phone – the Xperia 1.

What makes this particular model noteworthy is the 6.5″ 4K OLED screen it touts, which is a first for smartphones, along with a 21:9 aspect ratio for its display. Needless to say much of the chatter around this phone is the visuals it can muster.

At its unveiling Sony did not mention when the Xperia 1 would be available to purchase, but now we have more detail on that front, well if you live in Europe or the US.

To that end the Xperia 1 has gone up for pre-order in Europe, with the device set to be available Stateside come 12th July. When it does land in the US, the Xperia 1 will cost a recommended $949.99 (~R13 622).

While that’s good news for Xperia fans in those regions, South Africans are still in the dark as to when the Xperia 1 will land locally, or indeed if it will. In recent years the popularity of the Sony Xperia brand has waned a bit, with Huawei and other Chinese brands stepping into their place.

Whether the Xperia 1 is enough to win back fans locally, remains to be seen, but the new flagship is certainly well specced enough to do so.

To that end a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor is present, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage on offer. There’s also a new triple lens setup on the rear, with a trio of 12MP lenses present.

If the price is right should the Xperia 1 arrive in South Africa, it could a nice alternative to the sea of Huawei and Samsung phones int he market at the moment. We’ll have to wait for word from Sony Xperia’s local representation on that front though.
