It’s not often that a decision made in the USA affects customers of an international firm but, here we are.

At the weekend Huawei’s Android license was suspended by Google following an executive order from president Donald Trump.

The suspension of the Android license and – by extension – access to Google applications bring’s Huawei’s future around the world into question. Huawei has grown to be the second biggest smartphone brand in the world (by market share) and this ban has customers concerned.

Huawei has today issued a statement regarding the withdrawal of its license.

“Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry,” the firm told Hypertext in an email.

As for customers, Huawei assured them that updates will still be forthcoming.

“Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.”

Unfortunately there is no word on how long those updates will be provided. That having been said, the ban doesn’t extend to the Android Open Source Project which Huawei will likely still be able to use to update Android on its smartphones.

As for the future of Huawei? Well that’s anybody’s guess.
