The International 2019’s prize pool is already half as big as last year

Every year Valve’s global tournament for Dota 2 – The International – makes headlines for having the largest prize pool and this year it looks to be headed in that direction again.

The crowdfunded prize pool for the tournament calls on players and fans of the game to purchase a Battle Pass. This digital “ticket” gives players access to in-game cosmetic items and other niceties.

Crowdfunding for the tournament started just 12 days ago and already the prize pool has grown to reach 50 percent of last year’s $25 million prize pool.

The tournament kicks off on 20th August so there is a still a long while to go for the prize pool to grow.

Dota 2 is also benefiting from a higher-than-usual player base. The game has remained top of the Steam charts thanks to a high number of current players though we think part of that is thanks to the Dota 2 Arcade title, Auto Chess.

Anyway, back to Dota 2. Teams participating receive a portion of this pool depending on where they place during the tournament. Last year’s winners were OG who walked away with $11 million for their efforts.

There is something to be said about a game that continues to get its players to part ways with their hard-earned cash in pursuit of being the biggest esports tournament (monetarily speaking, calm down League players) each year.

For anybody who has never watched a Dota 2 tournament we urge you to watch True Sight: The International 2018 finals. The documentary takes you behind the scenes of the tournament with commentary from the teams.
