Hearthstone’s The Dalaran Heist: Fantastic fun with plenty of twists

All the way back in 2017, Blizzard announced that it would no longer release Hearthstone cards in the form of Adventures.

Adventures differed from Expansions in that all cards were acquired on purchased and then unlocked in single-player matches. They were enjoyable pieces of content that offered a break from the monotony of the Ranked ladder or the stress of the Arena.

We bring this up because despite no longer selling single player expansions, the latest single player offering from Hearthstone is well crafted, thought out and a serious amount of fun.

The Dalaran Heist coincides with the release of Rise of Shadows, the latest Hearthstone expansion. You can find our thoughts on the expansion here.

Breaking Bard

The first chapter of the new single player mode is free for all players with subsequent chapters costing 700 Gold or $19.99 to unlock them all at once.

So far only two of the five locations in the mode are accessible with only three classes available as well. For clarity, the classes available are Mage, Shaman and Hunter.

As you play a class you can unlock new hero powers and decks that you can use to start a run with. As you progress through a run you can choose buckets that contain cards you can add to your Adventure deck. This is akin to the way things worked in the Dungeon Run from the Kobolds & Catacombs expansion.

Every so often you are also asked to choose a new passive power that is in effect from the moment you start the game. These range from giving your minions +1/+1 for the rest of the game to healing all friendly characters by two points at the end of every turn.

These powers add a nice flare to the matches but don’t feel so powerful that they are game breaking.

As for match ups, the enemies you face have interesting hero powers and tactics. What’s more is the matches actually feel challenging even from the first match. The difficulty does increase but never to the extent of bosses such as The Darkness from the aforementioned Dungeon Run.

Another tier bartender

One aspect that differs from Dungeon Run, Monster Hunt and Rumble Run is Bartender Bob.

Encounters with Bartender Bob don’t rely on combat but rather ask you to add or remove cards, change the cost of cards or even add health to your hero.

In addition to Bob, there is also an Anomaly mode which adds a random effect to the game for a run. The effects switch when you complete a run.

In summary, The Dalaran Heist is fantastic fun and well worth the price of admission. For your money you also unlock three card packs for completing every chapter you complete and there are “more rewards awaiting those who finish all five” according to Blizzard.

The matches are fun, the tactics you are asked to employ are smart and Blizzard has just done a fantastic job of making a single player experience we just can’t get enough of.
