Julian Assange faces 17 new charges in the US and up to 175 years in prison

Following his sudden evacuation from the Ecuadorian embassy last month, Julian Assange’s future has been thrown into question.

Now the Wikileaks founder faces an additional 17 charges in the US. The charges are related to the thousands of cables and files related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that were leaked by Wikileaks.

Should Assange be found guilty and convicted on all charges he could face a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison in the US.

Wikileaks editor-in-chief, Kristinn Hrafnsson had this to say about the additional charges.

“This is the evil of lawlessness in its purest form. With the indictment, the ‘leader of the free world’ dismisses the First Amendment – hailed as a model of press freedom around the world – and launches a blatant extraterritorial assault outside of its borders, attacking basic principles of democracy in Europe and the rest of the world.”

Of course, the UK Home Secretary has the final decision on the extradition of Assange and Wikileaks says that the secretary is now “under enormous pressure to protect the right of the free press in the UK and elsewhere.”

“This is the gravest attack on press freedom of the century,” Wikileaks concluded.

Whether or not Assange will extradited is still unclear but we’re waiting for news on that with baited breath.
