Arabian Nights roguelike City of Brass is the latest Epic Store free title

While the Epic Store continues to be the videogame boogeyman gobbling up PC titles and making them exclusives, it also continues provide games free of charge every two weeks with the newest one being City of Brass.

This title, originally released back in May of 2018, is a first-person roguelike which banks heavily on its aesthetic and theme. Your goal is to escape the titular City of Brass, a doomed, fictional Arabian settlement full of treasures and monsters.

As expected for this genre death means starting from the beginning and fighting your way through the city all over again. To help you along the way one hand will always be dedicated to a whip which can be used in combat to stun enemies or pull them into traps. It can also be used outside of combat to yank precious gold from far away.

The most fun to be had with the whip, however, is swinging across the map using hooks splattered around the environment.

Your hand not dedicated to a whip can use all manner of weapons with the main type being several varieties of swords.

While that all sounds great the game was rather lacklustre at launch. When we reviewed  we found ample problems that lead to a rather low score and a lack of recommendation. To summarise: the core gameplay loop wasn’t that engaging and the map and enemy design was so poor that it became a chore to play.

That aside developer Uppercut Games has been steadily improving the title with updates and DLC both to fix the issues we had and to implement new features.

And, maybe more importantly, a review doesn’t really matter when the game is free and all you have to lose is some time (and maybe data if you’re paying for the download by megabyte).

Head on over to the Epic Store page for the game and give it a try.
