Gauteng Premier planning to do away with e-tolls for good

Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed the new Members of Parliament (MP) after he was sworn in as the South African President.

Following that the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura, appointed Gauteng’s Members of the Executive Council (MEC’s) and selected Jacob Mamabolo as the Gauteng MEC for Transport, in a bid to do away with e-tolls.

According to EWN, Makhura addressed the continuing e-tolls saga, and said they should be done away with once and for all.

“I use tolls when i go to Limpopo or Durban, but with those tolls you are not driving there every hour through them because you plan before compared to urban tolls. You cant avoid them,” said Makhura.

The e-toll system consists of the electronic toll collection processes employed by South Africa’s roads agency (Sanral) on selected toll roads or toll lanes in Gauteng, subject to the Sanral Act of 1998. They commenced on the 3rd December 2013 and have been under mixed operation since.

Earlier this year, News24 reported that the Board of Directors of Sanral suspended the process of pursuing e-toll debt, including historic debt and summons applied from 2015, after a memorandum that called for unconditional scraping of the e-tolls was submitted by the Gauteng ANC.

“And I want to say it again, e-tolls are not off my agenda and we have done a lot. I hope that the campaign is over, and it won’t be a temptation to politicise it, it will be resolved like any other policy issue. I am confident in Gauteng we will look into a future without e-tolls,” concluded Makhura.
