Single piece, transforming Megatron gets 3D printed

Back in March we featured a very unique 3D print of Optimus Prime, setting itself apart from other versions by way of its design – being able to be printed in a single piece while still retaining the ability to transform. Now Megatron is here to steal the spotlight as this character has received the same treatment.

This project is once again the work of Talmage Madsen who tells us that he had plans to create the leader of the Decepticons as soon as Optimus Prime was completed.

Madsen went for the tank interpretation here instead of the G1 gun as the proportions would work out better this way, especially when compared to his other print. The robot form of Megatron, however, was still heavily inspired by its G1 interpretation.

Modelling here was done in Autodesk Inventor over the course of two weeks, not including an abandoned version that sucked up three days of work.

This design work also included moving shoulders thanks to some ball joints. “I’ve never designed anything with them before and I was fairly nervous they wouldn’t work,” Madsen  says, “But they printed perfectly and I’m very proud of them.”

Printing itself was quicker at eight hours overall – seven going into Megatron and one into the famous Fusion cannon.

The size of the finished print of course depends on what mode it’s in. In robot mode Megatron is about 12.5 X 8.75 X 2.75 centimetres. When transformed into a tank this changes to 8.5 X 5.75 X 4.25 centimetres, not including the cannon.

You can see the finished print in the gallery below, which is suitably devoid of colour as the print is designed to go without finishing work. Grey was chosen for the main parts of the print, and black for the cannon to give it a bit of highlighting, however.

Those interested in a coloured version can try painting theirs, or using different colours of filament for each part as one maker did for his version of Optimus Prime.

You can find the files to make your own single piece Megatron over on Thingiverse.
