UJ launches accounting course aimed at Fourth Industrial Revolution

Earlier this week the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) launched the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for Accountants programme, which is the first suite of four courses designated specifically for chartered accountants.

According to The Citizen, this was revealed during a keynote address by UJ Professor, Tshilidzi Marwala, who shared his insights into the technologies required for the 4IR and also the consequences of the 4IR in the future.

“This fully fledged online course provides an introduction to the 4IR by exploring key topics within this realm. These topics include Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Natural Language Processing, Blockchain and Ethics,” explained Marwala.

The Citizen adds that 4IR for Accountants is a first of its kind online short learning programme, and is designed to equip accountants with skills to navigate the impending 4IR, by exploring key topics within this realm.

The professor touched on various technologies as well as concepts such as Machine learning and Computer Intelligence, and he explored how the 4IR impacts market efficiency, economics, finance and political science.

UJ adds that the course is designed as a self-paced Short Learning Programme (SLP) for SAICA’s Continuing Professional Development (CDP), and the course is driven by competencies that directly relate to SAICA’s 2025 vision for CA South Africa.

“UJ is proud of its partnership with SAICA in helping accountants to discover how to future-proof their careers as finance professionals by embracing the skills needed to navigate the fourth industrial revolution,” concluded Marwala.
