Destiny 2 heading to the Moon in latest Shadowkeep expansion

If you’ve find yourself spending less time playing Destiny 2 of late, Bungie has made a handful of announcements that are sure to pique your interest. The first comes in the form of a new expansion titled Shadowkeep, which sees Guardians return to the Moon. The other is a teased new version of Destiny 2 called New Light, a free-to-play flavour, but more on that later.

As for Shadowkeep, it’s slated for release on 17th September this year for $34.99 (plus a single season pass), which means there is still plenty of time for Bungie to revel more details about this upcoming expansion. From what we can tell, this new offering to join forces with “an ally” in the form of Eris Morn, who you will need to assist with a growing threat of the Moon.

At this stage it’s unclear what guise this new threat will take, but perhaps the most interesting part of Shadowkeep is the fact that it will be a standalone piece of content, and also the first that Bungie has developed without the input from Activision Blizzard.

As such players will not need to have had access to previous expansion, such as Forsaken, although you’ll likely have to up your power levels quite a bit if you have not been playing Destiny 2 for awhile.

As for the other significant announcement, as leaked earlier this week, Bungie is indeed working on a free-to-play version of Destiny 2 called New Light. It’s unfortunately unclear at this stage how much content gamers will have access to, but Bungie did not that it will include all of the foundational modes, activities and rewards.

Whether that includes the base game, such as the main campaign, along with some of the earlier expansions, remains to be seen.

Another important thing to note, particularly for PC gamers, is the fact that Bungie is no longer a part of Activision Blizzard, which means that version of the game will no longer be supported via Battle, net, but rather Steam. Bungie confirms that gamers will be able to port over all their current Destiny 2 data to the new platform when Shadowkeep launches in September.

The developer also confirmed that Destiny 2 will support cross-saving on different platforms, which includes PS4, Xbox One, PC via Steam, as well as Google Stadia when it launches in November.

With Destiny 2 winning us over when they launched Forsaken, let’s see if they can keep the hits coming with Shadowkeep.
