There’s a Pokémon Go-style Stranger Things mobile game on the way

We’re less than a month away from Netflix’s third season of Stranger Things being ready for streaming, and now it looks like the TV series is branching out into other media with a mobile RPG game announced by developers Next Games.

The Helsinki-based developer confirms the game will land sometime next year for iOS and Android devices, but could not offer up a more definitive launch date.

They did, however, mention some of the details about the gameplay, noting that it would be location-based and a puzzle-like RPG title. As such the location aspect of it immediately makes us think of Pokémon Go, with the game specifically featuring Google Maps integration.

“Through location-based mechanics and Google Maps integration, players can explore The Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels and work with fellow fans to fight back its emerging evils,” explained a press release for the game.

In terms of the design, Next Games says the look and feel will be like that of an 80s Saturday morning cartoon, as you can see from the artwork in the header mage above. Precisely how this will blend into the location-based gameplay is unknown at this stage, but the 80s cartoon aesthetic may be used for cutscenes in the game.

For now this is all we have to go on, but a tie-in for one of Netflix’s most popular series could just be the answer to keep fans interested while season four (we’re assuming there’ll be a season four) is busy shooting.

“Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things’ rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device,” adds Teemu Huuhtanen, CEO at Next Games.

If you can’t wait until next year, and need to get an immediate fix before Stranger Things’ 4th July release, why not get a LEGO set inspired by the show from the new Menlyn Park store?
