Square Enix reportedly pondering subscription service for all its games

E3 2019 is done and dusted, but that hasn’t stopped reports coming out of Los Angeles, with Japanese developer/publisher Square Enix said to be pondering a subscription-based service for all its games.

This comes after an interview that the company’s president and CEO, Yosuke Matsuda, had with Game Informer, in which he hinted at it being a possibility. Along with the subscription service, they could also explore the development of a streaming offering and, if true, it’s clear that Square Enix has been watching the recent Xbox E3 press conferences for a few ideas.

The point came up as Matsuda explained the company’s plan to port some of its older NES titles onto modern platforms, having created a dedicated team to handle that process.

“We’re working on (a digital release of its whole library) in a variety of ways. That is a request that we hear often,” Matsuda explained to Game Informer.

“We actually have launched a dedicated project internally to port those, so we are working to make them available on a variety of platforms. Certainly down the road, we would like to see that on a subscription or streaming service, so we’re exploring the possibility of creating a dedicated channel for ourselves,” he added.

In terms of what guise such a streaming/subscription-based platform would take is unclear, with Matsuda not alluding to any definitive decision being made by the game developer.

Either way the company certainly has a vast library of content to pull from, so there would be interest, but with so many subscription services popping up lately, it should be interesting to see if gamers will be willing to pay for a Square Enix one in particular.
