Apple recalling 2015 15″ MacBook Pro as battery may catch fire

There was once a time when quality could not be questioned on a MacBook Pro. In recent years, however, that reputation appears to be waning, as yet another notebook from Apple is being recalled due to component problems.

The device in question here is the 15″ 2015 MacBook Pro, with the battery in particular having found to catch fire fairly easily. As such, it’s less than an ideal feature for your high-priced MacBook Pro.

Apple posted a message on its Support site explaining the problem.

“Apple has determined that, in a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units, the battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. Affected units were sold primarily between September 2015 and February 2017 and product eligibility is determined by the product serial number,” writes the firm.

The aforementioned site also has a search bar embedded for 2015 MacBook Pro owners to check the serial number on their device, and determine whether it would be eligible for the recall.

Should your MacBook Pro be eligible, Apple advises heading to your local Repair Centre (available at most local iStores) in order to book the device in for a battery replacement.

We’re yet to receive any official confirmation from Apple locally, or indeed its distributor Core, about this issue, but past experiences have shown that the company has been on the ball when it comes to recalls or replacing components on devices.

That said, this latest episode is one in a series of issues that Apple is having of late. The more recent MacBook Pro models have been cited for poor quality due to the design of their keyboards, and prior to that the 2014 MacBook suffered from screen coating problems.

Needless to say the standards appear to have dropped at Apple, while prices for devices still remain at a premium.

Hopefully this gets sorted promptly, as quality use to be one of the key pillars for any Apple product.
