San Francisco is working to ban the sale of ecigarettes

In a bid to curb the rise of young people using them, San Francisco is working to ban the sale and distribution of ecigarettes in the city.

This comes after the city voted on the matter and, while it isn’t in effect yet, it is on its way.

The legislation will have to be approved by San Franciso mayor, London Breed, but according to The Guardian, Breed has indicated she will sign the legislation.

A San Franciscan supervisor went so far as to liken the fight against ecigarettes to the fight against big tobacco.

Naturally, ecigarette firms aren’t watching this happen without doing something. Indeed, ecigarette firm Juul operates from San Francisco and a spokesperson told The Guardian that the firm will push back against legislation.

“This full prohibition will drive former adult smokers who successfully switched to vapor products back to deadly cigarettes, deny the opportunity to switch for current adult smokers, and create a thriving black market instead of addressing the actual causes of underage access and use,” Juul spokesperson, Ted Kwong said.

Should the ban become a reality stores would have seven months to remove ecigarette products from their shelves.

Of course this is not a ban on the use of ecigarettes which means one would simply have to go to another city in order to get the products they need.
