Steam Summer Sale 2019 starts, discovery queue trading cards gone

Like clockwork the lauded Steam Summer Sale kicked off a few hours ago with the theme of this one being the “Steam Grand Prix”, but a feature of past sales has been axed.

In the past users were encouraged to explore games they may eventually buy by way of clicking through their Discovery queue. Aside from finding new games, clearing the queue would award trading cards during the sale, but were capped at three per day to incentivize returning to the store every so often.

It appears that, for this Summer Sale at least, the trading cards for exploring the queue are not on offer. Moreover, it seams that the queue itself is more difficult to find. The only way we were able to track it down is by going to the announcement for the old discovery update and following a link from there.

If you want to go back to the discovery queue you can view it here, so it has not been removed at this time. Going through all the suggestions for the day does not yield any rewards, however.

So after removing its famous flash and daily sales some years ago and now the free trading cards, what is on offer outside of the discounted games?

Like many of the past big sales, there’s a metagame to be played within he community known as the “Steam Grand Prix”.

The rules to this game are explained in the “driver’s manual” down below. Certain actions such as, of course, buying games, will increase the standing of a team you can join with random members of these teams being awarded free games from their wishlist.

The five teams are named after animals: Pig, Hare, Cockatiel, Tortoise and Corgi are the options here. As expected people are flocking to the Corgi team which is currently winning by a massive margin on this first day.

If you want to play this metagame it looks surprisingly deep, at last as far as a drive to make people play and buy games goes. There’s also a quest system for playing certain titles which will award certain benefits.

Make sure to read over the dedicated Steam Grand Prix page for the full ruleset.

Those not interested in the discovery queue without trading cards may be happy to know that the main page of the store now has its own featured section. The top three there, at least right now, are Devil May Cry 5, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Astroneer discounted by 34%, 50% and 25% respectively.

As always we recommend going through your wishlist to see what games you want are discounted. We also recommend that, after finding a game you may want, look to other online stores before making a purchase as they may have the title cheaper.

The Steam Summer Sale 2019 is on right now and will end come 9th July.
