After 30 years at Apple Jony Ive is leaving the firm

Apple has revealed that its chief design officer, Sir Jony Ive (pictured above left), will be leaving his position at Apple later this year.

According to a press release from Apple, Ive will be leaving to form an independent design company which will count Apple as a client. In addition to this Ive will reportedly continue to work with Apple on “a range of projects”.

“Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care,” Apple chief executive officer Tim Apple Cook, said in a press release.

Moving forward vice president of Industrial Design, Evans Hankey, and vice president of Human Interface Design, Alan Dye, will report to Apple’s chief operating officer, Jeff Williams. The firm says that Williams will spend more of his time working with the design team.

Williams has led development of the Apple Watch since its creation.

“After nearly 30 years and countless projects, I am most proud of the lasting work we have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer. Today it is stronger, more vibrant and more talented than at any point in Apple’s history,” Ive said in a statement.

Ive’s new company will be called LoveFrom and he will be joined by Marc Newson according to a report from The Verge.

We’re almost sad to see Ive go. He lent his voice to many an Apple video and even though his use of “uncompromising” has become something of a meme, we’re going to miss it.
