Twitter now notifies followers when public figures send harmful tweets

Twitter has a new feature that should prove interesting for those on the platform that enjoy following public figures, with a notification now appearing when those accounts infringe the platform’s rules on harmful content.

The notification will appear in the form of a tweet to replace the harmful content, in a similar fashion to the sensitive imagery one that currently appears on feeds.

The message says the following, “The Twitter Rules about abusive behaviour apply to this Tweet. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain available.”

This new functionality will only apply to accounts belonging to political figures, the social media platform confirms, along with having at least 100 000 followers and being verified.

As for how a tweet will receive such treatment, if a message is flagged, a team at Twitter will manually evaluate it and determine whether it warrants the new notification. It’s still to be seen what multiple infractions based on Twitter’s latest guidelines will mean, and whether this system could be used to ban accounts from the platform.

With the company having a spotty history at best when it comes to banning and removing harmful content from its site, it should prove interesting to see how effectively Twitter can carry out this latest notification system.

As The Verge points out, a divisive political figure like US president Donald Trump, could easily be viewed as contravening Twitter’s guidelines, but whether they are willing to action against the American leader is unclear.
