Chernobyl, The Handmaid’s Tale and more coming to Showmax this month

We’ve passed the halfway mark for 2019 and as Winter idles on in South Africa we’re looking for some high quality viewing for those chilly nights.

Enter Showmax stage left which has upped the ante in terms of what’s on offer this month.

First up, Chernobyl.

The mini-series starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson captivated the world and it’s available to watch in full on Showmax right now.

Chernobyl follows the events immediately after Reactor Number Four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experienced a malfunction.

While we’d usually include a trailer for the show here, this time around we’re linking you to Scott Manley’s video about why Chernobyl exploded. This video should help you understand why the explosion happened.

Then, on 4th July Warrior Season 1 lands on Showmax.

The show was filmed in Cape Town and follows martial arts prodigy Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji) as he leaves China for San Francisco in the second half of the 19th Century.

The show is created by Johnathan Trooper of Banshee fame and is based on an idea by Bruce Lee.

Having already run seasons one and two, Showmax is bring the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale to the platform on 22nd July.

The show’s arrival on Showmax follows its debut on Hulu last month and if you haven’t been able to watch the latest season just yet, Showmax has your back.

For movie fans, there are a number of films headed to Showmax this month.

From today (1st July) you can watch Failure to Launch, Precious, and the Spy Next Door.

On 11th July you can look forward to Kick-Ass 2 or the Nigerian-Norwegian film The Lost Cafe which releases on the same day.

In addition to series, movies and documentaries, Showmax also launched a sports streaming service in Beta last month.

Showmax Sport is currently streaming all of South Africa’s AFCON 2019 matches with the next match happening between South Africa and Morocco at 17:50 this afternoon.
