Huge Jurassic Park LEGO set lands in South Africa for a monstrous R4.5K

Last month we learned that LEGO would be creating a rather special set in 75936: Jurassic Park: T. rex Rampage that would feature not just the classic dinosaur, but also the iconic gate and a collection of minifigures from the first Jurassic Park movie. Now South Africans can buy the set locally, if they have deep enough pockets.

Overseas the price is set at $249.99 / €249.99 / £219.99 depending on your country. Thanks to the set recently going up for order in this country, we know that we’ll be paying R4 499.99 from the Official LEGO Store, where it is available exclusively.

Not to toot our own horns, but we were 100 percent accurate when we guessed its local price during the initial worldwide reveal. If you want to get really anal you can say that we were off by one cent – as we guessed R4 500  – but if you’re the kind of person to make that argument then we can’t be friends.

Those prices mentioned about convert directly, at the time of writing, to R3 540  /  R4 010 / R3 939 respectively. As our prices are usually based on that of the UK, it seems that we’re only paying R500 more than our British counterparts.

Given the size of this set (3 120 pieces) and the huge, heavy box it comes in, R500 is actually very reasonable. Anyone who has had to import large items into the country in a private capacity will attest to this.

That being said, it does make an already expensive, luxury item even more difficult to afford, but at least we’re not being taken for a ride compared to overseas markets.

As a quick reminder of what those 3 120 pieces build, the T. rex itself is 22 X 69 X 17 centimetres, and the gate is 42 X 48  X 14 centimetres.

The T. rex is articulated at many points, especially in the tale, and the gate features small cutouts to pose the minifigures to reenact scenes from the movie. The minifigures included are modelled after Alan Grant, Dennis Nedry, Ellie Sattler, Ian Malcolm, John Hammond and Ray Arnold.

You can buy the set right now online, or visit the Official LEGO Stores in Sandton or Menlyn.

Oh, and we know this is labelled as a Jurassic World set and not a Jurassic Park set, but that’s to do with some weird licensing with LEGO. We use the two properties interchangeably.
