Watch David Coulthard race a taxi through Cape Town

Let’s be honest, the first few races of the F1 2019 season have been, well, boring.

Sure, it’s great to see Mercedes-Benz dominate the season after years of hard work but, the season could do with a shake up. Perhaps a new video featuring local comedian Jason Goliath could serve as inspiration to mix the sport up a bit.

The video in question sees former World Champion runner-up David Coulthard race against a South African icon – a HiAce taxi.

The car Coulthard is racing is the Red Bull RB7 which was used during the F1 2011 season by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Vettel won the championship that year in that car and cemented Red Bull as a team to watch.

Last month Aston Martin Red Bull F1 team was in Cape Town to give locals a taste (or rather a sound) of what F1 is all about with Coulthard driving the vehicle around a make-shift city circuit.

It appears that part of that event involved filming the video you can see below.

There are local references aplenty in the video with our favourites being the window-washer and the lady selling Coulthard a copy of The Big Issue.

The race culminates in a finish at the incomplete fly-over near the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Fans of the sport have been speculating that F1 might return to Africa once more and this sort of video won’t allay the hopes of local fans.

There are indeed talks of a Grand Prix being hosted on African soil once more but where exactly that race would happen is very much up to speculation at the moment.

As much as we’d love F1 to come back to Kyalami, this Red Bull video has us chomping at the bit for a Cape Town City Circuit race.

Make it happen Liberty Media.
