Safe space – Kaspersky to provide cosmonauts with cybersecurity training

With so much technology floating above us and the prospect of consumer-grade electronics being able to survive space, we often wonder about cybersecurity in space.

We’re seemingly not alone in that thinking as Kaspersky has announced a new partnership with the Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. Through this partnership Kaspersky will hold special training for cosmonauts and IT specialists with a view to educating them about the current cybersecurity landscape.

The training will cover the different varieties of cyber threats that exist in the space industry, what cybercriminals are targeting and various other methods of cyberattacks.

Doing the training at the Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Center makes sense as it’s the place where space travelers receive their final training before heading to the International Space Station.

“We’re proud to support this center, founded at the time of the very beginning of space exploration, and which now trains astronauts from all over the world. It’s very exciting for us to be involved in developing scientific progress – the restless movement forward – and upward and outward – of humanity,” Kaspersky chief executive officer, Eugene Kaspersky said in a statement.

Of course the obvious question is why cosmonauts need cybersecurity training at all?

Kaspersky says that the same cyberattacks which threaten business and individuals could be even more devastating in the space industry and as such it’s important that folks understand the basics of cybersecurity.
