T-Systems teaching high school students cybersecurity digital awareness

A couple of weeks ago, 25th June to be more precise, T-Systems South Africa launched a three-day holiday programme where it invited 50 high school pupils from various institutions across the country to participate.

The course was hosted at the T-Systems Academy in Johannesburg, with the aim to introduce learners to the world of information technology and also equip them with much-needed skills.

“As part of our nation building initiative and in line with driving economic empowerment through skills development, we thought it would be beneficial to host a programme that would better prepare and expose learners to the digital age,” explained T-Systems ICT Academy manager, Marcus Karuppan.

According to the company this year’s course dealt with the issue of cybersecurity, and also featured an overview of how to be safe online, concluding with a module titled Will Your Future Be in Cybersecurity.

The five focal points of the programme were:

  • The need for cybersecurity
  • Attacks
  • Concepts and techniques
  • Protecting your data and privacy
  • Protecting the organisation.

“There is a great need for cybersecurity specialist in South Africa, however, the current skills do not match the demand. This is why we chose to launch our programme with a focus on security,” said  Karuppan.

T-Systems adds that the course also introduced coding concepts as a tester for future programmes on coding and application development, as well as addressing soft skills for pupils and provided them with training on building confidence, along with career guidance on opportunities available in the ICT industry.

“We are considering developing this programme even further and plan to partner with various schools, community centres and hopefully the Department of Education in the future. Our ICT will ensure that our youth becomes participants in the Fourth Industrial Revolution by giving them the knowledge, skills and understanding required for tomorrow,” added head of T-Systems Nation Building Initiative, Shirley Vmjas.
