85 000 pupils still unconfirmed for 2020 academic year, says Western Cape MEC

The third term of the 2019 academic year is about to begin, with public schools reopening on 9th July, and only four months left till the beginning of the 2020 academic year.

Focusing on the forthcoming academic year, Western Cape Department of Education MEC, Debbie Schafer, has raised major concerns on the lack of response from parents with application worryingly low.

According to IOL News, the MEC said that there were over 85 000 applications for school places still unconfirmed by parents for next year, with applications being successful but parents failing to make their final choice on the system.

“The third term is where our official take on the mammoth task of ensuring that the department is prepared for the start of the 2020 academic year by finalising and processing last-minute admissions,” said Schafer.

The MEC says that parents have until Thursday, 11th July to confirm placement at their school of choice and if they do not, the Department would allocate the first place where their application was successful.

“Parents must preferably confirm on the system directly, which is much quicker to do and allows the parent to see the outcome immediately. If parents are unable to confirm on the system they can e-mail or call our district offices or our head office for assistance,” added Schafer.
