Face ID and Touch ID for iCloud sign-in may be on the cards

There could be a new way to sign into your iCloud account on the way, with reports suggesting Apple will integrate Face ID and Touch ID into the logging in process.

This according to 9to5Mac, with the site adding that the feature could be available in iOS 13, macOS Catalina and iPadOS 13, all three of which were showcased by Apple at WWDC 19 a few weeks ago.

The Cupertino-based firm turning to biometrics to facilitate features on their devices is nothing new, with Face ID used to unlock compatible iPhones, and Touch ID used to take care of App Store purchases.

Integrating such biometrics into the sign-in for iCloud makes a lot of sense then, but whether it will prove more secure for users is unclear, especially as a beta for iCloud asks users whether they wish to stick with two-factor authentication or shift to the new Face ID or Touch ID method.

With two-factor authentication a useful tool in ensuring one’s device is secure in a relatively easy way, skipping it may be a bad call in the long run. Perhaps though, Apple could use a combination of Touch ID and Face ID to work as a double verification system?

Regardless it’s clear that Apple is certainly rethinking the way it handles security on its platforms, and sign-ins in particular, having also shown their new Sign-In with Apple feature at WWDC 19 as well.
