Presidency tells Ministers and Premier to come up with solution for e-tolls

In late May, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, appointed Jacob Mamabolo as the new Gauteng MEC for transport to do away with e-tolls, as this has been a hot-button issue for the province’s drivers.

According to SA News, after an exchange that occurred on Twitter, where Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni discussed the divisive issue of e-tolls.

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has also weighed in on the matter, mandating that Mbalula work with Mboweni and Makhura to submit to cabinet a solution to end the deadlock around the e-tolls on Gauteng freeways.

“The public interest is best served through collaboration, not conflict, and the appropriate platform for leaders to express and reconcile different views is Cabinet and other coordination forums,” said the Presidency in a statement.

The aforementioned statement confirms the deadline, with it calling on the Ministers and Premier to table proposals to the cabinet by the end of August this year. The Presidency adds that it, “expects that the consultations within the government over the coming weeks will produce workable outcomes.”
