President Ramaphosa promising new school curriculum for 4IR

Late last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed delegates at the Fourth Industrial Revolution South Africa (4IRSA) Digital Summit which took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

To showcase potential technology advancements in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the President’s address was projected via a 3D holographic image, while he also spoke on the issue of South Africa’s curriculum in 4IR.

According to Business Tech, in his address the South African President said that the government was committed to training more than one million young people in data science and related skills by 2030.

“As I undertook in the state of nation address, we are introducing subjects such as coding and data analytics at a primary school level to prepare our young people for the jobs of the future,” said the President.

Ramaphosa also stated that a number of technology-focused subjects would be introduced to the South African school curriculum, with the programmes including data science and analytics, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics and quantum technologies.

“Through various support programmes such as the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) and other targeted human capital development initiatives, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) is building essential capability in all technology areas underpinning the 4IR,” added Ramaphosa.

The President ended by stating that over 1000 young people are currently being trained on the following subjects – data Science, digital content production, 3D printing, drone piloting, software development and cloud computing.
