Around 28 000 students waiting for NSFAS allowance payment

Earlier this year, the former Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, responded to a parliamentary question which asked about the unresolved National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications from 2017/2018 that stood at 83 186 students, that was later resolved.

Now the new Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Blade Nzimande, has announced that 28 000 students have yet to receive their allowances.

According to IOL News, the Minister revealed this in a written reply to a parliamentary question from the EFF’s Ciliesta Motsepe, who had enquired about the number of payments made by NSFAS to students.

“As of 20th June 2019, for the 2019 funding cycle, NSFAS had 565 011 students on record that met the eligible criteria for funding and for which NSFAS received registration data for approved courses,” said Nzimande.

The publication reports that the Minister explained that the reason the 28 000 haven’t been paid their allowances is due to a failure to sign their bursary agreements or providing correct cellphone numbers for NSFAS wallet payments.

“Funds have been disbursed to 536 848 students in the form of allowances, leaving 28 163 students to be paid,” added Nzimande.

Furthermore Nzimande said that the allowances of affected students at universities could be accomplished once their bursary agreements were signed.

“NSFAS is liasing with institutions to assist in ascertaining whether the students still require funding or have received alternative funding support,” concluded the Minister.
