HMD Global makes Android 9 Pie available on the entry-level Nokia 1

This week HMD Global, which owns the license to manufacturer Nokia Mobile devices, announced that as of today (12th July), the Nokia 1 operating system can upgrade to Android 9 Pie (GO edition).

According to HMD Global, the Nokia 1 is the final phone in its smartphone range to receive the upgrade to Android 9 Pie.

Added to that, the advantage here is Android 9 Pie (GO edition) featuring a range of apps from Google that are designed to run faster while consuming less data. The OS system is optimised to be smooth and fast and includes features such as Google Go, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Assistant for Android, the firm notes.

“With Nokia 1 getting its very own slice of Pie, we now have a full portfolio of Nokia phones on Android 9 Pie. With the Nokia 1 upgrade to Google’s latest OS, fans can get up to the minute software experience and innovations from Google even in the most affordable segment,” explains GM at HMD SA, Shaun Durandt.

Furthermore HMD Global said that now everyone owning a Nokia smartphone will have the experience of the latest available Android OS from Google.

“This changes the industry paradigm, for too long consumers have had to accept older OS versions as the norm on entry-level smartphones. We are living our promise to deliver a phone that will keep getting better over time through the latest experiences and always being up to date,” adds Durandt.

The Nokia 1 has been available to purchase from local retailers for some time now, and is sold in either red or blue, with a recommended retail price of R799.
