Nokia 2.2 now available in South Africa for under R2k

HMD Global has been on a bit of a streak of late, releasing a new Nokia Mobile phone locally for what seems like every other day. The latest device to arrive in South Africa is the budget-friendly Nokia 2.2, which is set to retail for a recommended R1 899.

As with some of the previous devices, the Nokia 2.2 is available through Vodacom and its retail channels initially, coming only in the black colour option, with no word on when other networks or retailers will be stocking it.

Sitting crucially below that R2k barrier for local consumers, the 2.2 packs in all of the basics one expects for a modern smartphone, as well as touting interesting features like Face ID unlocking, support for Google Assistant and a full-screen display with cursory notch.

Other elements see a 5.71″ HD+ screen up front, with the aforementioned screen notch housing a 5MP camera. The rear option bumps things up to 13MP, with HMD Global opting for a humble octa-core MediaTek Helio A22 chipset internally.

There’s also 2GB RAM and 16GB onboard storage. For the latter you’ll likely want to get a microSD card to expand storage, with the Nokia 2.2 capable of supporting up to 400GB. On the battery front a relatively large 3 000mAh unit is powering things.

HMD Global certainly have more performance-heavy options available locally, but we’re assuming the 2.2’s price tag will make it particularly enticing for consumers wanting to make the jump from feature phone to smartphone.
