Alienware co-founder Frank Azor is now working at AMD

For 21 years, Frank Azor has been working at the firm he helped form – Alienware.

But this month the co-founder announced that he would be leaving Dell (where Alienware is a division) to “take on a new challenge”.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve built together. Our gaming and premium consumer businesses are outperforming the market and are a huge priority for Dell,” Azor said in a post on the Alienware forums.

“But the builder and creator in me is ready for the next challenge. It will be very hard to leave this incredible team. Stop for a second and just think about what this team has accomplished. It’s truly remarkable.”

Where exactly Azor was headed was the topic of many rumours but yesterday AMD chief executive officer, Lisa Su, tweeted a photo of Azor,

As you can see from the tweet, Azor will be taking up the position of chief architect of gaming solutions. He will report Sandeep Chennakeshu who was recently appointed as vice president of AMD’s computing and graphics business group.

With Dell and Alienware doing well, perhaps Azor could add a bit more magic at AMD though it hardly needs it if we’re honest. The firm’s recently released Ryzen 3000 CPUs have been praised for their affordable price and excellent performance.

Azor’s appointment leads us to believe that gaming is set to be a major priority for AMD moving forward.
