While places like community centres have always offered up courses like intro to sculpting or leather work, none of them have the pedigree of Weta Workshop.

The company is a titan in the industry of special effects both in the practical and CGI spaces. Looking over their timeline of past projects is truly staggering: Blade Runner 2049, Thor: Ragnarok and Ghost in the Shell are just some of the movies they’ve worked on in previous years.

Now the company is offering up the chance to learn from their talented employees in what is called “Craft with the Crew”, a variety of tours and workshops designed to teach you the basics of various disciplines.

At the time of writing three different options are available and a tour of the premises can be added on to any of them. They are listed down below along with their prices. It’s worth noting that we’ve listed the standard prices, but Weta Workshop has discounted them all by $10 for the launch of this programme –

  • Intro to movie makeup workshop: $79
  • Leather and chain mail workshop: $79
  • Intro to sculpting workshop: $79
  • Add tour to any of the workshops: $20

If you’re already reaching for the credit card slow down, because this is something you will need to be physically present for, and it’s taking place in Wellington, New Zealand.

If you live close enough or are considering going to the country to attend, you can check out the dedicated page for the workshops, or the one for the tours.

We’re not sure how long Craft with the Crew will run for, but the page listed above has workshops and tours from 25th July until 1st September 2019.

Those disappointed about not being able to attend should look up some local maker spaces near them which usually offer the same services. The community centres mentioned earlier remain a great choice too and are usually really cheap to attend.
