Kaspersky discovers fake version of FaceApp containing adware

This week FaceApp has been grabbing headlines and it appears as if some folks wanted to take advantage of this.

Unfortunately some of those folks happen to be cybercriminals and they have created a fake version of FaceApp.

This is according to Kaspersky, which reports that it has found a fake version of the viral app that contains adware known as MobiDash.

The cybersecurity firm says that the fake FaceApp is downloaded from unofficial sources and installed. Once installed the application simulates a failure and the app is removed.

Except not everything is removed. Kaspersky says that a malicious module containing the MobiDash adware remains on the device and displays adverts to the users.

So far the app has only infected 500 users but that’s just in the last few days. The first time the fake app was detected was 7th July.

“The people behind MobiDash often hide their adware module under the guise of popular applications and services. This means that the activities of the fake version of FaceApp could intensify, especially if we are talking about hundreds of targets in just a few days. We urge users not to download applications from unofficial sources and to install security solutions on their devices to avoid any damage,” notes Igor Golovin, security researcher at Kaspersky.

Just like Kaspersky we highly recommend downloading applications from official sources. FaceApp is available for both iOS and Android so there really is no reason to download the app from anywhere else.
