Microsoft shows off hologram of Azure exec Julia White speaking fluent Japanese

We’ve seen holograms used in a good few places already. Most recently President Cyril Ramaphosa used a hologram to appear in a remote location.

Holograms are cool but the usefulness of the tech hasn’t been used for very much else other than bringing musicians back from the dead or the aforementioned appearing in places a person can’t be.

During its Inspire 2019 conference, Microsoft showed off a new use case for hologram tech.

Using body and voice capture, Azure AI and HoloLens, a hologram of Azure executive Julia White was able to speak Japanese fluently, despite the real White not knowing a single word in Japanese.

What made the demonstration even more impressive is that the hologram sounded like White.

“Using Azure AI technology I can translate my English into Japanese and train it to sound exactly like me,” said White during her keynote.

This training gives the AI the ability to speak just like White with the same tone and inflections. Essentially this tech could be used to help speakers at conferences “speak” in multiple languages at once.

That having been said this demonstration still looks to be very much like Microsoft showing what is possible with Azure AI and the new HoloLens 2 headset.

To get the same effect at home you’ll need access to a Mixed Reality Capture Studio, high resolution cameras, HoloLens and the list goes on. The point of this demo though is likely to show folks what is possible with Microsoft’s tech.

Something we do want to make note of is how good Microsoft’s Hologram looked. While it does still look different to a real person the resemblance to the real life White is uncanny and the hand gestures and small movements help make it look just that bit more real.

You can check out Microsoft’s demo in the video below.
