The new Asus ROG Phone II has some of the beefiest specs around

Gaming smartphones are yet to find a more mainstream appeal, with them remaining niché offerings for the moment. One firm aiming to lead the charge on the smartphone gaming front is Asus, with the second iteration of the company’s ROG Phone being tested out by a handful of international sites today.

The ROG Phone II, as it has been christened, will be revealed in full at an event in conjunction with Chinese firm Tencent, where a precise release date and pricing for the device are expected. It will also be our first official glimpse of the device, with the header image above being the original ROG Phone.

For now, the ROG Phone II will likely command a premium price, especially if the high-powered specifications and components of the gaming smartphone are anything to go by.

To that end The Verge’s Vlad Savov reports that it sports a 6.59″ OLED screen up front that delivers 1080p visuals. Said display also integrates a fingerprint sensor and supports 10-bit HDR, along with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Powering the ROG Phone II is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, which is paired with a gaming-specific SoC developed by the same silicon maker. This mix yields a 15 percent better GPU performance, according to Asus, with far higher clocked CPU speeds too.

As for the rest of the components, 12GB of RAM is present, with 512 GB of storage, a massive 6 000mAh battery and 48 megapixel camera added to the mix. The battery in particular intrigues us, with Asus noting that it can muster up to seven hours of continuous PUBG at 60Hz.

It still remains to be seen how much Asus is aiming to sell the ROG Phone II for, and indeed where. With the previous one costing around $899 and not even been made available in South Africa, there could still be some time until an Asus gaming smartphone lands locally.

That said with a rumoured release in September, just in time for IFA 2019 in Berlin, perhaps Asus will detail more about its availability plans for the ROG Phone II.
