Check out the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals made from recycled tech

Back in 2016 the organising committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics announced an ambitious plan to make its medals out of recycled materials, and now we’ve gotten our first glimpses at the prizes.

The video (pasted below) showcasing the medals, also offers up the first look at the designs, which the organising committee says was whittled down from nearly 400 entries. The design will also feature on all 500 medals that have been made for the 2020 Olympics.

The winning design came from Junichi Kawanishi, director of the Japan Sign Design Association and the Osaka Design Society.

“It is a great honour that my design was selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal,” said Kawanishi.

“I never dreamed that the design I submitted only as a memorial to this lifetime event would actually be selected. With their shining rings, I hope the medals will be seen as paying tribute to the athletes’ efforts, reflecting their glory, and symbolising friendship,” he added.

As for the recycled material used to create the Olympic medals, organisers say a total of 78 985 tons of discarded devices were collected before the collection cycle closed on 31st March earlier this year.

The massive collection drive across Japan meant that the final goals of 30.3kg of gold, 4 100kg of silver and 2 700kg of bronze were reached.

Along with the Olympic medals, the ribbons and cases are also said to have been made from recycled materials.

With the sustainability initiative for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics already starting off well, we doubt any athletes will be discarding these medals any time soon.
