Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 launches locally, and yes it’s running Android

Huawei has a new phone set to launch locally in the form of the Y9 Prime 2019, which also happens to be the first device the manufacturer has launched in the country following its recent battle with the United States.

While the spectre of the Trump presidency still looms for the firm, the new Y9 Prime 2019 will be fully supported from an Android operating system perspective, the company confirmed during a media event held earlier today. To that it runs Android 9.0 Pie and the firm’s EMUI 9.0.

At the event Huawei also talked up one of the most interesting elements of the Y9 Prime – the pop-up selfie camera that the device sports.

Said camera takes one second to lift up into position, and also features machine learning technology that prompts it to close if pushed upon or dropped. It’s also fairly hardwearing and can handle weights of up to 15kg and, in Huawei’s testing, could manage 100 000 lifts before any fault was detected.

Added to this locally Huawei is offering a free repair should the pop-up camera break by accident within the first two years of purchase. This is separate from the two-year warranty on the pop-up camera which is in place should there be a manufacturing fault.

As for the rest of the specifications, the Y9 Prime 2019 has a 6.59″ screen up front, with no notches to speak of, resulting in an all-screen viewing experience. On the rear a fingerprint sensor is present to take of the biometrics, with a triple lens setup also found. The latter consists of a 16MP, 8MP and 2MP trio of lens, with the aforementioned pop-up camera being 16MP.

Internally Huawei has opted for 4GB RAM and 128GB storage for the local market, along with a Kirin 710 chipset and large 4 000mAh battery present. It will also be available locally in three colour options – midnight black, emerald green and sapphire blue – but Huawei South Africa says availability may differ depending on the retailer or carrier.

Speaking of which the Y9 Prime 2019 is set to be ready to purchase on 1st August, with it carrying a recommended price tag of R5 399. At this stage contract pricing is not detailed, with pre-order information expected to arrive later this week.
