City Power hit by ransomware, citizens unable to buy electricity

Distributor of electricity in Johannesburg, City Power has alerted citizens to a technical problem it is currently battling.

We say problem but it’s actually far worse – the utility has been hit by a ransomware attack.

As you might be aware, ransomware encrypts all data on a system and demands a ransom for a decryption key. The trouble with this attack is that there is no guarantee that if a user pays they will get a decryption key.

Indeed City Power has said that its databases, application and network has been completely encrypted. The utility’s ICT team is reportedly “cleaning and rebuilding all impacted applications”.

As a result of the attack the City Power website is currently inaccessible and citizens may not be able to purchase electricity units.

The utility has directed customers to its mobile website – citypower.mobi – to log calls.

At the time of writing there is no word on when we can expect normal service to resume but we will endeavour to bring you updates as and when they are made available.
