Destiny 2’s Solstice of Heroes event introduces a new combat zone

With Destiny 2’s Season of Opulence beginning to wind down, players are getting ready to participate in the final event for the second year of the game – Solstice of Heroes 2019.

The event will see players enter a new area called the European Aerial Zone (EAZ). In this area players will dispatch Hive, Cabal and Fallen enemies.

From what we can see in the trailer (embedded below) the area looks rather similar to the Infinite Forest but with a decidely Vex-less aesthetic.

The goal in this area, according to Bungie, will be to defeat as many mini-bosses in the area before time runs out. When time does run out players will face a final boss and set out of in search of treasure once it is defeated.

Rewards that can be earned include Rare and Legendary gear, Enhancement Cores and “materials”.

During a run through the EAZ, players will generate Elemental Orbs. These pickups will allow you to upgrade your armour (more on that in a second) and each day the orbs will cycle between Destiny’s three core elements – Solar, Arc and Void.

Collecting 30 Elemental Orbs will grant you the following buffs:

  • Equip your Solar subclass and weapons to generate Solar orbs. Then, collect them to wield their Solar elemental power. While empowered, Guardians emit a burning wave of energy that damages anything around them.
  • Equip your Void subclass and weapons to generate Void orbs. Then, collect them to wield their Void elemental power. Crouch while empowered to become invisible and gain Truesight plus enhanced ability regeneration.
  • Equip your Arc subclass and weapons to generate Arc orbs. Then, collect them to wield their Arc elemental power. While empowered, Guardians move with enhanced speed and deal greater melee and Sword damage.

These effects will not be active in the Crucible’s Competitive playlist or Gambit Prime.

The first Armour 2.0 set

Come the launch of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep in September the armour system will be reworked entirely.

While details are still thin on the ground we do know that the goal is to give players freedom to pick gear they like the look of while also keeping the perks they prefer.

Of course, this means that whatever players have at the moment could be useless come September. With this in mind, players begged Bungie to make the forthcoming Solstice of Heroes armour sets compatible with the new system.

The reason for this is that Solstice of Heroes armour comes to you in a Drained uncommon state which is frankly terrible. By playing the game however players can upgrade armour (using the aforementioned orbs) to a Renewed rare state and by playing even more it can be upgraded to the Majestic legendary set which is what you really want.

With a new armour system on the horizon, grinding for that Majestic armour might seem pointless so. Thankfully Bungie has listened to player feedback.

“We know that while upgrading these sets is a fun experience, it does take a commitment of time and effort. Lest it feel like a bummer earning this set just to have the new armor system make it somewhat obsolete when Shadowkeep releases, we decided, based on player feedback, to make the Solstice of Heroes armor set the first armor 2.0 set you will receive (assuming you earn it, of course),” said Bungie.

This means that when Shadowkeep goes live on 17th September you will have a set of armour waiting for you at the gunsmith.

Solstice of Heroes kicks off on 30th July and run until 27th August. The event will be available to all Destiny 2 players.
