Tinder introduces new safety feature for LGBTQ users traveling abroad

This week Tinder will introduce a new feature which will warn LGBTQ users when they travel to a country where their relationship preferences could get them into trouble.

Dubbed Traveler Alert, the feature will not only warn users about a countries archaic policies but also hide their profile. Users will then be able to choose whether they want their profile to remain hidden during their stay.

Should a user opt to make their profile public, their sexual orientation or gender identity will be hidden so as to protect them from law enforcement and those targeting LGBTQ individuals in that particular country.

An example of the warning users will see.

To help with where this feature would be activated, Tinder worked with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA World). As an aside, the ILGA World website is an excellent resource for finding the sexual orientation laws in countries around the world.

The Traveler Alert feature is being rolled out to users on iOS and Android over the next few days and will be active when on the ground in a country with anti-LGBTQ laws or using Tinder’s Passport feature.
