City Power’s pre-paid vending system back online but isn’t out of the woods yet

On Thursday City Power revealed that it had suffered a ransomware attack that had crippled its ICT systems.

Since then the utility has been working hard to restore its systems back to an operational state and there is some good news on that front.

The pre-paid vending system which lets Johannesburg residents purchase pre-paid electricity has been restored. That having been said, residents who are unable to purchase pre-paid electricity are urged to contact City Power’s call centre on 0800 00 3251.

City Power’s suppliers however aren’t in as good a situation. This is because suppliers cannot log invoices with the utility and as such, cannot get paid.

The utility has requested that suppliers submit their invoices physically at the City Power offices in Booysens (the address is 40 Heronmere Road, Booysens, Johannesburg).

A number of other services remain unavailable including the website but City Power has said that it is working to have all systems restored today (26th July).

City Power will continue to update customers and all stakeholders about the progress of the recovery and restorations. And about the outcomes of the investigation into the cause of the cyber attack,” the utility said in a tweet.

The City Power board also took time to thank customers, and companies that contacted the utility and offered assistance or support.

As we saw with the WannaCry attacks in 2017, ransomware can negatively impact any organisation so the fact that folks offered to help City Power is admirable.

Here’s hoping normal service is resumed before too long.
