Franky Zapata planning second attempt to fly over English Channel on Sunday

A little over week after an initial unsuccessful attempt to cross the English Channel with his Flyboard Air, inventor Franky Zapata is set to make his second attempt this weekend.

Sunday to be more precise, with France24 reporting that Zapata that will try to make the same 20 minute journey on his hoverboard-esque device, departing from the same point at Sangatte in France to St Margaret’s Bay in England.

The route that Zapata will be flying will also be the same as it was in the previous attempt, with one key change being the refuelling station that will be placed halfway along the journey. During the first attempt, it was a failure to land on this refuelling station which resulted in a non-fatal crash.

Whilst trying to land on the boat housing the refuelling station, Zapata missed the platform by a few centimetres according to his team, so the solution for this second attempt is simply a bigger boat. With his Flyboard Air capable of operating for 10 minutes at a time, it is the refuelling portion of the flight that is the only real hurdle at this stage.

As such chances are far higher that Zapata can complete the journey, although it must be said that the Flyboard Air is extremely difficult to pilot.

Should he be successful, he will also be the first person to complete a crossing of the English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard.

We’ll know by Sunday afternoon whether second time is a charm.
