Nintendo Switch Online adds two games and a rewind feature

The NES games provided as part of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription have been bolstered with new titles as well as a way to rewind gameplay.

The two games are, as ever, rather uninteresting. Donkey Kong 3 and Wrecker’s Crew should be available if you have an active subscription and the game software installed.

If, at this point, you’re thinking “doesn’t Nintendo Switch Online come with three new games every month?” well you’re right. In the past the third game was sometimes kept as a Japanese exclusive due to the fact that the third game had been left without an English localisation for years.

That doesn’t seem to be the case this month as, looking at the official Nintendo YouTube channel, Japanese players are also getting the same two games.

We can only assume that the third game has been sacrificed for new functionality in the form of a rewind. At any point in these games holding down the triggers (ZL and ZR) will bring up a small “gallery” of previous states of the game. Select one which is to your liking and the game will rewind to that point.

While we’ll never begrudge new functionality, Nintendo Switch Online continues to be a disappointment. Yes it still costs less than its contemporaries in Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus, but the games on offer (and the network performance) is still shockingly underwhelming more than a year since its launch.

With so many NES games now available on the service the hope is that SNES and other older emulated titles will come soon.
