Telkom to start migrating postpaid fixed-line customers on copper to fibre or wireless

Late yesterday afternoon Telkom made a rather impressive announcement.

The telecommunications firm announced that 96 percent of fixed-line prepaid customers had been migrated to wireless prepaid service.

Telkom says that this was done because its wireless service is more reliable than the older copper technology that was in use.

Telkom also said that it will begin discontinuing its legacy copper-based fixed line prepaid service from today, 1st August.

Now, however, Telkom has the task of migrating postpaid fixed line customers to fibre and wireless.

“Having successfully migrated over 96% of prepaid fixed line customers, Telkom is now migrating postpaid fixed copper-based voice and / or DSL customers to fibre and wireless. The service is gaining momentum with customers who’ve respond well to the SmartVoice, SmartBroadband Wireless and UNLIMITEDhome fibre offerings,” Telkom said.

Now, we don’t expect this to happen overnight. Telkom first announced the migration of prepaid customers in 2015 and now, four years later, that process is only nearing completion.

Getting rid of copper, however, is a good idea. Not only can it be affected by weather but it’s also tempting for criminals looking to cash in on scrap copper sales.

Of course, in the absence of fibre and decent LTE coverage, copper remains the only source of connectivity for those in need of fixed line connectivity.

That having been said, with mobile networks pushing hard to increase LTE coverage, the reliance on copper and fixed line services has dipped.

Here’s hoping Telkom starts to push fibre out to more areas as it attempts to rid its network of copper.
