Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition is R3799+ in South Africa

Over the weekend the collector’s edition for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was announced, dubbed the “Dark Edition” with a set of working night vision goggles. This will be available in South Africa, with some caveats.

At the time of writing we can see only three retailers offering this product – BT GamesRaru and AnimeWorX (AWX @ Nexus).

BT Games is the cheapest option here selling the Dark Edition for R3 799, while Raru is pricier at R4 199 and AnimeWorX matches that R4 199.

The big ticket item in the box here is obviously those goggles, which come with a handy stand that you can use to display them when not in use.

It’s claimed that the goggles allow you to see up to 65 feet (just under 20 metres) in the dark, and feature “custom decals and design details” based on the game. The full specs of the goggles are outlined in the official website for the game.

Thankfully this is a collector’s edition that actually comes with the game, which is the Operator Edition in a steelbook.

If that sounds like something you’d like to splurge on, don’t whip out the credit card just yet as the Dark Edition is only available on PlayStation 4 in South Africa right now. There is a version for the Xbox One in other parts of the world, and we can only assume this was left out in our market due to the popularity of Sony’s console here.

We’ve seen this happen before with the collector’s edition of Doom Eternal not being available for PC in South Africa.

So what premium are we paying in this country, if any? In the US the Dark Edition is selling for $199.99. At the time of writing that converts to around R2 977.

As we always note when looking at these local pricings, it’s worth taking a few factors into consideration. Firstly the US price may not include tax depending on the state it is purchased in, while our South African price will always include VAT.

Next up is the sheer size of these items. Collector’s editions are huge boxes that are usually on the heavy side, and importing them yourself as an individual (as opposed to a company) will likely result in shipping and customs duties costing more than the product itself. The difference in price here for the Dark Edition, then, isn’t exorbitant.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release come 25th October 2019, and the Dark Edition should land locally on the same day.
