Purveyor of e-cigarettes Juul has launched a new device that requires users to verify their age before using it.

The Juul C1 sports Bluetooth connectivity so that users can connect the device to an Android handset. There is no word on support for Apple handsets just yet.

With this a user can connect to the vape to see how much they have used it, lock the vape or even track it via GPS if they misplace it.

More than that however, to get your hands on a Juul C1, you’ll need to be over 18.

“To purchase the JUUL C1 device currently available on our e-commerce websites in Canada and the UK, customers have to go through a strict age-verification process,” a spokesperson told The Verge.

“This process includes submitting photos of an identification document that are checked against third-party databases to verify the customer’s age and identity.”

While it’s widely reported that the C1 is an answer to an increasing number of teenagers vaping, we do wonder whether it’s a good idea for a firm like Juul to have access to all this data.

The firm says that data is anonymised and will only be used to improve products. Juul also says that the data will not be sold to third parties without explicit permission from a user or when Juul has to comply with legal and regulatory matters.
